MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

Stella McKenzie, Garden Dance Centre Ballet and Jazz Instructor
BALLET & JAZZ INSTRUCTOR

Meet Stella McKenzie

Stella McKenzie is Garden Dance Centre’s Ballet & Jazz instructor. She fell in love with the art of dance at the age of eight. By seventeen, she had won three National Championships for Mater Dei High School and was awarded the title “Dance Star” by the United Dance Association.

Stella attended UCI and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Social Ecology. After years of studying under world-renowned choreographers, she perfected many dance forms, including Classical Ballet, Fosse Jazz, Egyptian Dance, and Brazilian Samba.

Her career has taken her across the nation and around the world. Starting in New York City, she trained and performed the Fosse style of Jazz with Broadway star Anne Reinking. She later became assistant choreographer and principal dancer for Akubra Contemporary Ballet Company in Los Angeles. Her early projects included choreographing HBO’s “Pretty Things” and performing for Michael Jackson.

Stella toured the world with Imagine Nation before landing a lead spot in the Vegas-style revue for Sandcastle in Saipan in the Marianas Islands. Back in Los Angeles, she danced with the award-winning Layla and the Lotus Dancers for six years, appearing in numerous music videos with Persian Pop artists Mansour and Leila Forouhar.

Her performance career also included becoming a Las Vegas Showgirl at the world-famous Rio Hotel and Casino, launching a solo dance career, performing at weddings and cultural events, appearing in staged shows including “King King Folies” in Hollywood, and performing the Dance of the Seven Veils. She was also a featured dancer at the Official Grammy Awards After-Party.

While performing has always been her passion, Stella considers the time she spends with children the most fulfilling part of her life. While pursuing her dance career, she simultaneously worked as an elementary school substitute teacher for Montebello and Los Angeles Unified School Districts. She taught bilingual and special education classes in inner-city schools for seven years and has taught dance to children and teens in studios for more than seventeen years.

In 2023, Stella graduated Summa Cum Laude with a master’s degree in counseling from Palo Alto University. She is currently an AMFT specializing in therapy for children and adolescents.
